Transformational Coaching

What is Transformational Coaching

Imagine being in a pool. Above the surface of the water, you can hear and see everything that is going on around you. Your surroundings are filled with stimulus. The sounds, the sights, the temperature, smells, the feel of the breeze. This is a complex surrounding.

Now imagine if you held your breath and went underwater. Your surroundings change considerably. You no longer experience all the complexities that you experienced on the surface. Most of the sounds and the sights disappear. The smells become a single smell if at all. The feeling is only that of the water and the temperature of the water.

This same analogy holds true with transformational coaching. Most coaching takes place above the surface. The majority of coaching clients seek out coaching because they are looking to change behaviors or to accomplish something in particular. In other words, they are looking to learn something. This is where most coaches operate. For example, a Health and Nutrition Coach might teach you to eat a balanced diet and best practices for exercise and fitness. A Leadership Coach would teach you how to be a strong and organized leader. A life Coach would teach you to identify your dreams, set goals, and to take the necessary steps to achieve them. All consciously learned behaviors that take place above surface level.

A Transformational Coach, on the other hand, works below the surface on a level much deeper than consciously learned behaviors. Working below the surface requires a completely different skillset than working above the surface. Below the surface is where the true essence of the self lives, the unconscious mind. The unconscious mind is made up of our core beliefs, our perceptions, attitudes, values, and drivers. All the things that come together to comprise the person that we truly are. Below the surface, there are never any concerns of “How to”. Below the surface, the only concern is of protecting you from harm, whatever that may look like for you. The unconscious mind is not rational or strategic. It’s only concern is your welfare.

That’s where a Transformational Coach comes in. A Transformational coach understands how to communicate with your irrational, unconscious mind, with language and techniques that it understands. A skilled Transformational coach has been trained how to ask the questions and watch for the answers that the unconscious mind gives.

Working with a skilled Transformational coach is nothing to take lightly. In doing so, you are going to change your life. You will feel your very neurology shift and you will feel differently about the hurdles in your life and be able to overcome them. (Notice I did not say you will learn to overcome them.)

Transformational Coaching is not for everyone. It requires a lot of hard work and dedication, but the results can change your life.
